Virtual pet apps that use Apple Health (2026)

Updated October 19, 2026 · 7 min read · How we write these

Nularo reads your Apple Health and turns it into a creature that reacts to how you really slept and moved. Get it

Short answer

Most Apple Health pets only eat steps: Nomi ($1.99), Poki, Belly and DigiBuddy all turn walking into food on your iPhone or Apple Watch. Pokémon Sleep reads sleep only. Two read much more: Habitvs (free, iPhone and Watch) and Nularo (iPhone, subscription) both use sleep, heart data and movement. Finch does not read Apple Health; you check off goals yourself. To see what any pet app can read, open Health, tap your picture, then Apps under Privacy.

You wanted a Tamagotchi that feeds itself on your real life: walk more, it thrives, sleep four hours, it suffers. Then you searched the App Store and found forty pixel cats, most of which only count steps. Here is what each one actually reads.

What Apple already gives you (no pet included)

Apple does not make a virtual pet. The closest built-in things are the Activity rings and, on Apple Watch, a Sleep Score from 0 to 100 that shows up in the Sleep app about 15 minutes after you wake. Apple builds that score from duration (up to 50 points), bedtime consistency (30) and interruptions (20). If you want to see it on your phone, open the Health app, tap Search, then tap Sleep.

Every pet app below works the same way under the hood: it asks Apple Health for permission to read certain data types, and the pet reacts to whatever you allow. That permission screen is the most honest description of an app you will get. Before you trust any listing, check it yourself:

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Summary, then tap your picture or initials.
  3. Under Privacy, tap Apps.
  4. Tap the pet app to see each data type it can read or write, and turn any of them off.

A pet that only asks for Steps is a step counter in a costume. That is fine, just know which one you are buying. And if you mostly care about sleep, it helps to know whether Apple Watch tracks sleep debt before you pick a pet that claims to.

Every Apple Health pet worth knowing, compared

We checked each app's current App Store page in October 2026. "Manual logging" means you have to tell the app something yourself for the pet to change.

Pets that eat steps

This is the biggest group, and the one most Reddit threads (including an r/AppleWatchApps post titled "Why isn't there a proper virtual pet app for Apple Watch") end up recommending.

Nomi is the most polished watch pet here. Its listing says it "integrates with the Health app to measure your movements and steps", and you fill a heart ring with steps and exercise, or switch it to Active Energy. Nothing leaves your device. It sleeps six hours a day on its own schedule, not yours.

Poki syncs with the Health app and turns walking into hearts. Hit your step goal and it gets happier. Free, with a $4.99 Pro upgrade.

Belly lives only on Apple Watch. Its listing is blunt about it: health data is used only to count steps for in-game rewards. The draw is the pixel art and the dress-up items.

DigiBuddy syncs steps from Apple Health automatically, with an option to log manually if you prefer. It has a watch companion app and is actively updated.

A warning about older listings: HealthMon still shows up in searches, but its last update was in 2017. Check the version date before you get attached.

Pets that read your sleep (and more)

Sleep is the stat step pets ignore, and it is the one that changes how you feel the next day. Only a few apps use it.

Pokémon Sleep is a sleep game, not a pet in the classic sense. You put your phone by your pillow, or link Apple Health to use sleep from a compatible Apple Watch, and the Pokémon you meet depend on how you slept. It reads sleep only. Nothing about steps or heart. For how it stacks up against other sleep games such as SleepTown, see our guide to gamified sleep tracker apps.

Habitvs is the closest thing to a full Apple Health pet, and it is free. Its pet, Kova, changes energy and mood based on sleep, movement, HRV, recovery, mindfulness and daylight, and it reflects all three activity rings. It runs on iPhone and Apple Watch with complications. It also mixes in things you do by hand (mood check-ins, daily promises, tasks), a "Talk with Kova" chat that uses Apple's on-device models, and suggestions about movement and rest. If you want a gentle companion that nudges you, it is a strong pick.

Finch belongs in this conversation because so many people search for it, but it is a different kind of app. Its App Store listing mentions no Apple Health sync and no Apple Watch app. Your bird grows when you complete self-care goals, morning check-ins and exercises inside the app. It is kind, popular (4.9 stars from 766K ratings) and built for people who like logging. If logging is exactly what you are trying to avoid, our Finch alternatives for adults covers the options in more detail, and if you do like logging, we compare Finch with other self-care tamagotchi apps like Kinder World and Quabble.

Where Nularo fits

Full disclosure: Nularo is our app. It sits in the "reads everything, logs nothing" corner of the table, next to Habitvs, but it makes different choices.

Zero logging. Nularo reads Apple Health read-only: sleep, sleep stages, steps, active minutes, workouts, resting heart rate, HRV, respiratory rate and SpO2. You never type anything in. Journaling and evening Confessions exist, but they are optional and the creature does not need them.

A morning verdict. Each morning you get a notification with one of four moods (glowing, fine-but-judgy, wrecked, suspicious), judged against your own 14-day baseline, plus a roast written from last night's real numbers. The creature judges. It does not coach, give advice or tell you to drink water. Some people find that refreshing for an adult virtual pet, and some find it rude. Both are correct. (For roasts of other things, your music, your Strava, your selfies, see apps that roast you.)

Creature Age. Once a week Nularo turns your sleep duration, bedtime consistency, steps, active minutes, resting heart rate and HRV into an age, with a breakdown of which habit added the years. In the screenshot below the creature is 27.9 against a real age of 22. A good stretch can make it up to 1.5 years younger than you. It is a rules-based, for-fun number built from public-health guidelines, not a medical measurement, and it stays hidden until there are 7 days of data. If that idea appeals, we compare it with Apple and Whoop in biological age apps for Apple Watch. It does not use VO2 max, which is what a fitness age on Apple Watch is built from.

There is also a friend mode: two creatures side by side, joined with a 6-character code. Your friend sees your display name, today's mood word and a good-day count, never your sleep, steps or heart numbers. More on that in sleep tracking with a partner or friends.

The honest limitations. Nularo is iPhone only, with no Apple Watch app, so the pet never sits on your wrist like Nomi or Belly. It works the morning after, not in real time. Without a watch, Apple Health has much less sleep and heart data to give it. And it is a subscription with a paywall after onboarding ($39.99 a year with a 3-day free trial, or $9.99 a month), while Habitvs is free.

How to choose

If you want a cute thing on your wrist that rewards walking, get Nomi or Poki. If you want sleep to count and you like check-ins and suggestions, try Habitvs. If you want a creature that reads your whole night and day without a single tap and tells you the truth about it, that is the gap Nularo was built for. And if you are curious about energy-style scores, read whether Apple Watch has a Body Battery first.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Apple Watch virtual pet that tracks sleep?

Habitvs has an Apple Watch app and reads sleep from Apple Health along with HRV and activity rings. Pokémon Sleep can use Apple Watch sleep data through Apple Health, but the game itself runs on iPhone. Nularo reads Apple Watch sleep through Apple Health too, but it is an iPhone app with no watch app.

Does Finch connect to Apple Health?

Not according to its current App Store listing, which mentions no Apple Health, step or sleep sync, and no Apple Watch app. Finch's pet grows when you complete self-care goals and check-ins inside the app.

Which Apple Health pet apps are free?

Habitvs lists no in-app purchases. Poki, Belly, DigiBuddy and Pokémon Sleep are free to download with optional purchases. Nomi is a $1.99 one-time purchase. Nularo is a subscription ($39.99 a year with a 3-day free trial, or $9.99 a month).

Can a virtual pet app change my Apple Health data?

Only if you grant it write access. In the Health app, tap Summary, tap your picture or initials, then tap Apps under Privacy to see exactly what each app can read and write. Nularo asks for read-only access and never writes anything back.

Does Nularo work without an Apple Watch?

Yes, your iPhone still records steps for Apple Health. But sleep stages, resting heart rate and HRV mostly come from a watch, so without one the creature has thinner data to judge you on.

Nularo is an entertainment and wellness app, not a medical device. Nothing on this page is medical advice. If something about your sleep or heart worries you, talk to a doctor.
